Not that I would say this to Floyd Mayweather's face, but I'm not the biggest fan of Mayweather's. It's not that he is brash, that's expected from any Alpha-Type boxer. It's moreso his persona is somewhat gaudy and "unpolished" to me.
At the same time, I am in total admiration of his youthful vitality at 36 going on 37, as he dismantled the 23 year old Canelo Alvarez in the much hyped, but somewhat routine, "another day at the office" victory in his undefeated career.
Having watched many boxers and other athletes looking sadly "washed up" at age 37ish, I was impressed and inspired by Mayweather seemingly having tapped into that athlete's "Fountain of Youth".
Steroids? I doubt it…..
No I know some cynic is saying, "Maybe he is on steroids or performance enhancing drugs"……..Not a scientific opinion, but I doubt it, especially since he was so vehemently passionate about Manny Pacquiao taking taking a drug test as a fight prerequisite, in which Pacquiao kept refusing. Naw, it seems like he is "clean"……..
When you get my age, which is "over 50", albeit a VERY,VERY, blessed youthful, never been sick over 50, we know that although 37 is considered old for most athletes, it is really a very young age in the non-sports sense. However, athletes in most contact sports are generally considered "old" at this age.
Historically speaking, age is not kind to athletes
When one looks back upon sports history, the point proves itself. I have seen the entire film of the Joe Louis vs. Rocky Marciano fight in 1951, and Marciano literally destroyed the nearly 37 year old Joe Louis. And who could forget sad spectacle of the 38 year old Muhammad Ali, looking totally lifeless against Larry Holmes in 1980.
Us sports lovers have seen it a million times in sports, that is, players in their late 30's, be it ego, or one last paycheck, or whatever, who just need to "hang it up", and save yourself some dignity, and save us the torture of watching some man who we used to idolize, look like the shell of a man that none of us want to become.
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee (Part II)
However, Mayweather simply "kept it real" for us "Old Guys". He was super quick, agile, punches were fluid and powerful, jabs were nice and clean, footwork was amazing.
It got me thinking that perhaps we all can mooch off his mindset that age ain't nothing but a number, and be it sports or the "real world", 37 is no where near old……unless your mind starts to fool you and tell you that it is.
WTF? A Hand Exercise Coach?
Looking more into Mayweather, his amazing skill in the boxing ring at age 37 is not just hard core grit, and determination, but he literally has a whole "road crew" working on his body to keep it in tip top shape.
He is really into massage therapy, and even has a lady he pays big money, whose sole job is to strengthen his hands via various hand strengthening exercises.
Inveting cash in one's self (money well spent)
So, in a sense, in the is day and age where the top sports figures have the cash to shell out to extend the shelf life of their athletic career, if you got the cash, then you hire the maintenance team for the body.
To me, it's a principle that we all can carry, whether we are into athletics or not. Sometimes, my $147 dollar grocery bill from Whole Foods for 4 bags of groceries probably feels as painful as Mayweather shoveling out $800 per hour for a hand exercise specialist.
Money ain't too tight for my health
But for me, money is always tight, just like it is for most of us. However, I am a six figure salary person with very little overhead like kids in college and such, and henceforth those grocery bills, and bulk superfoods, healthy club fees, exotic $60 a bottle herbs, and all the rest, should keep me being the heavyweight champ of my own little world….money well spent.
Gaudy? I apologize…....
Come to think of it, Floyd Mayweather, I have to apologize. Maybe you're not gaudy after all, maybe you are a master of wisdom, and I'm the gaudy one. Floyd may actually be a trendsetter in shaping the mindset for a new generation of "Old Guys and Girls"……oops, that was a "gaudy" phrase, ……shall I say "Ageless Guys and Girls"
