Unlucky 13: The first 13 years of Genetically Engineered Crops

I sometimes regret that I don't speak enough on my blog against the hazards of eating Genetically Modified Foods, or GMO's. Just for the record, I am a conspiracy theorist at heart, and a person who's natural inclination is to venomously "Rage Against the Machine".

However I don't wanna spend the rest of my life fighting Cargill and Monsanto, so I took a kinder, gentler approach with my blog, eating organic, enjoying "real food" and in that way, indirectly giving Cargill and Monsanto "the finger", as I enjoy another year of having never been sick.

However, when I speak to family and friends on nutrition, those folks who know I am not a  true "guru", but they are folks who know that I give "relatively" sound, reasonable, practical advice on health and wellness issues, due to my god-given talent of love for wellness research, I tell them simply, "STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ALL GMO's"…….

GMO's scare me. Mainly because I think there is an intentional effort to cross pollinate all plants, and we could be in danger of have no non-GMO food in the future whether we like it or not (I told you I was a "conspiracy theorist" at heart).

I could write volumes about why I hate GMO's but I would be writing forever. Methinks it is only necessary to bring up one of a gazillion negative points about GMO's, and ask the reader to look at the video below.

My one point is, although one of the original intents of Genetically Engineered crops was to eliminate pesticides, the basic finding is that compared to pesticide use in the absence of GE crops, farmers applied 318 million more pounds of pesticides over the last 13 years as a result of planting GE seeds. Riduculous…..sigh……….

In 2008, GE crop acres required over 26% more pounds of pesticides per acre than acres planted to conventional varieties. A report projects that this trend will continue as a result of the rapid spread of glyphosate-resistant weeds. The full report is 69 pages, and is accessible below.  To read a copy of the report go here.

Let's have the animal kingdom have the final word, watch the squirrel below refuse to eat the GMO corn tortilla in the video below. Watch closely, pretty interesting.

Your fears are my fears, that in the future there will be no real food left.  Even now I don't think I can avoid gmo foods completely.

I think they are trying to intentionally cross pollinate everything

Isn't it too bad they keep winning in court?

It’s too bad but there nothing I can do but try to win the game on my personal level, and hope the cult of consumers and farmers that hate organic foods continues to grow. I think the problem with that is Monsanto is designing GMO’s that will cross pollinate and take over everything. Hawaiian Papaya farmers are finding that out the hard way, as Organic Papaya products are finding their crops pollinated with GMO DNA. Sigh……………..
