Real Men Can Cook: Sweet N’ Spicy Sloppy Joes

Around Christmas time, when the family gets together, we try to give the women a break and have an event we call "Real Men Can Cook". Its where all the men get in the kitchen and do all our specialties. A lot of fun, and very serious. Two of my brothers almost came to blows a couple years ago 🙂

Anyhooz, my older brother holds the title from his last years amazingly good Hawaiian Chicken, but I'm gonna regain the throne with a simple but tasty twist to a classic, no doubt provoking those Sloppy Joes mom prepared growing up.

I'm gonna do these Sweet and Spicy Sloppy Joes.

Sweet and Spicy Sloppy Joes

2 tbsp Virgin Organic Olive Oil, divided
1 organic onion, finely chopped
2 stalks organic celery, finely chopped
1 organic carrot, grated
2″ piece organic ginger, minced
3 cloves organic garlic, minced

2 lbs ground pasture raised turkey (or you can use grass fed beef or bison, I AVOID ALL COMMERCIAL MEATS)

1½ cups homemade ketchup or homemade barbecue sauce (I'm not a fan of any store bought ketchups or barbecue sauces)

¼ cup organic brown sugar (I eat almost zero sugar all year, so I bend my rules a little here)
½ cup organic tomato paste (preferably from glass jar as opposed to cans)
¼ cup organic apple cider vinegar
¼ cup naturally fermented soy sauce

Optional: If you want to "Sweeten the Pot" with a "mystery sweet" you can add some finely diced organic apples. Give a great taste that is hard to dicipher when the sandwich is first is bitten into

1-2 tsp organic cayenne (start with less and add more to taste)
1 tsp ground organic cumin
¼ tsp ground organic cloves
soft rolls, for serving (Try to avoid bread made with canola oil or cottonseed oil)


Heat olive oil in a dutch oven or large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat.

Saute onion, celery, and carrot until soft, about 5 minutes. Add ginger and garlic and cook until fragrant, about one minute.

Add the beef and cook until fully browned, about 10 minutes.

Stir in the homemade ketchup, brown sugar, optional diced apples, tomato paste, vinegar, soy sauce and spices.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes.

Serve with split rolls, spooning a generous amount of filling between halves (The Sloppier, The Better!!!!).
