Healing my back problems from watching an Earthquake Documentary

Back problems plagued me about a decade ago, supposedly from a bulging disk.

I would work on strengthening by back at the health club via back extension exercises, where you bend the torso and straighten the body while suspended horizontally. It helped some, but stiffness hung around for years. But I had an epiphany as I was watching the Discovery Channel do a show on building construction in an earthquake zone.

 

Those back extension exercises would almost have me in tears sometimes, but I just fought my way through it. It seemed however, whenever I would lift weights, especially leg exercises such as the leg press machine, or Smith Machine Squats, my back would be stiff, and sitting and sleeping would be very uncomfortable. I had no solution except accepting this was part of turning 40. However I was watching the Discovery Channel, and they were talking about how buildings are designed in Los Angeles and Tokyo, where they have to allow the building to be able to sway and have flexibility in case the ground moves underneath. The guy said, "The Building must not only be strong, but flexible". Of course the light bulb came on at that point, because I was strengthening my back, but not doing anything for flexibility.

I never been much of a stretcher. So now as part of my workouts, I do my own version of stretching , and my own version of yoga, to keep my back flexible. I continue to do my back extensions to strengthen my back also. All I can say is that I don't have back problems anymore, and I just need to take my time before hitting the weights to do some stretching. Funny how I feel better so far as my back is concerned than I did 10 years ago, more proof that getting older doesn't mean the body necessarily has to fall apart. Remember, "strength and flexibility". ~dw~
